Several studies have been done on the importance of removing your shoes when you enter someones home. One such study was done at University of Houston. Scientists found that around 40% carry a terrible bacteria called "C.diff", which is short for Clostridium difficile, this is an extremely difficult bacteria to treat.

What else is on the bottom of you shoes?
Think about all the places you walk throughout the day. Parking lots, bathrooms, grass. Your shoes can be covered in small amounts asphalt debris, urine, pet feces. dirt, bacteria.

This is why your should always remove your shoes, when you enter your home. Not only can this help prevent the spread of bacteria in your home but will increase the longevity of your carpets. Asphalt and small rocks can grind down carpet fibers, damaging them beyond repair. That is how high traffic patterns are formed in carpet and this process is expedited by dirt and debris in carpet and on shoes.
Weekly thorough vacuuming and regularly getting your carpets steam cleaned will ensure a longer life of your carpet.
